The Embassy of Bangladesh in Algiers opened a book of condolence from 05-06 January 2026 for the host country, as well as for the diplomatic missions and international organisations, following the sad demise of Begum Khaleda Zia, the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh, three-time former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
H.E. Mr. Abdelmalek Tachrift, Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, visited the Embassy and signed the condolence book on behalf of the Algerian Government. He conveyed his profound condolences to the Government and people of Bangladesh and expressed solidarity in this period of mourning. In his remarks, he wrote, “the name of the deceased is closely associated with the modern history of Bangladesh, having left indelible marks in the process of building and advancing her country as the first woman to hold the office of Prime Minister. With her departure, Bangladesh has lost an exceptional personality who devoted her life to serving her nation, preserving its unity, promoting the welfare of its people and enhancing Bangladesh’s standing on the regional and international stage.”
