China to encourage Myanmar to start the repatriation of the Rohingyas – Chinese Foreign Minister

State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi assured Foreign Minister Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen that China will encourage Myanmar to start the repatriation of the displaced persons to the Rakhine State. He also said, China will continue to host trilateral meetings among China, Bangladesh and Myanmar to provide platform for dialogue to ensure the early return of the displaced people.

Chinese Foreign Minister made the remarks during his bilateral meeting with Dr. Momen in Beijing yesterday (05 July 2019, Friday). The meeting took place on the sideline of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ongoing visit to Beijing.

Wang Yi said, “China will enhance and strengthen bilateral relations with Bangladesh to realize the objectives of Strategic Partnership of Cooperation as was decided at Bangladesh –China Leaders’ Summit held in Dhaka in October 2016.” Chinese Foreign Minister mentioned that President Xi Jinping hosted a banquet in honour of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina where both leaders had free exchange of thoughts. He also said that the Summit talks reflected mutual trust and friendship currently existing between the Bangladesh and China.

Both Foreign Ministers agreed that solution to the Rohingya crisis will contribute to the peace and stability in the region. Dr. Momen asserted that Myanmar needs to create conducive conditions like assurances of safety and security for the displaced people to start return of the Rohingyas.
